Cost and construction of the Pistoia canal
Gradient, sealing a leaking bed, and a reckoning in ducats and staiora
Two dense columns of notes plan a navigable canal running some 25 miles from Florence toward Serravalle, by way of Prato and Pistoia. The right column sets a fall of one braccio per mile and prescribes remedies for a canal bed that absorbs water: divert the nearest turbid river through it, and if that fails drive small livestock (pigs, sheep, goats) over the site for several days to seal it. The left column works out the cost in detail, reckoning staiora of land per mile and pricing the whole scheme at 18,750 ducats, then weighing a narrower profile and the sale of the redundant old road. Curing a canal bed that leaks
If the earth of the bed drinks the water, the nearest turbid river is to be passed through it and it will be healed. If that is not enough, small livestock (pigs, sheep and goats) are to be driven over the site for several days, and it will without doubt be sealed.
A fall of one braccio per mile
A descent of one braccio per mile gives, over 25 miles, 25 braccia of total fall, which is a little more than the drop from here to the foot of Serravalle. This gentle gradient governs the whole run of the canal.
Reckoning the canal cost in ducats and staiora
With 20 braccia of canal and 20 of road, every 40 braccia of length takes one staioro of land priced at 10 ducats. At 40 braccia per staioro this yields 750 ducats per mile and 18,750 ducats over 25 miles, or 1,875 staiora in all. Narrowing to 16 braccia of canal and 14 of road saves a quarter of the cost, and the old road could largely be sold to those whose holdings adjoin it.
