Universal method of lowering the horse-mould by winch
Winch-and-frame (argano) that raises and lowers the forma; furnaces and core to follow
The drawing shows a heavy braced timber cradle carrying two large rollers or pulleys at its top, with a curved mould element enclosed within — the winch apparatus (argano) for handling the horse-mould. The note calls this the universal method of lowering the mould (forma) both inverted and face-down: the winch timbers are set in place only after the mould has been detached from the horse, and the furnaces are built once the mould is closed up again in the ground so the core (masschio) can be formed inside it. This frame is kept separate from the mould's own timber armature and serves only to raise and lower the mould.
