On weights, blows, and the flight of projectiles
Comparing united weights, hammer-blows, and the range of crossbow shots

He also observes that a violently cast body changes its path at the middle of its course, passing from 'violent' into 'natural' motion as it begins to fall toward the center of the earth.

United weights and combined blows
Many small heavy bodies joined and melted together weigh more than when separate, as with lead filings or ground glass. Likewise a single hundred-pound blow penetrates a lead bar far more than a hundred separate one-pound blows dropped from the same height.
Crossbows and the limits of projectile range
Flight behaves contrary to the rule for blows: if a one-pound crossbow shoots an arrow one hundred braccia, a ten-pound crossbow does not shoot a thousand. This holds for all instruments that use violent motion to launch a projected thing.
Violent motion passing into natural fall
A stone or heavy thing cast with violence changes its line of course at the middle of its path. Aiming an arrow over a bell tower, Leonardo says it strikes perpendicularly beyond, a sign that violent motion has ended and the body now falls freely toward the earth's center.
Penetration of a hammer into lead
Doubling the weight of a hammer dropped from the same height does not double how deep it drives into lead: a hammer of double weight penetrates only one and one-half times as far. Similarly, doubling the drop height increases penetration by only half again.
