Ballistics: The Strongest Part of a Cannon-Ball's Flight
Why the middle of the straight path strikes hardest; air driven into circles like rings in water
A bombard fires its ball along a straight path marked a, b, c; at c the ball leaves the straight line and falls, while ring-like waves of disturbed air spread around its course. Leonardo argues that the middle of the straight portion of a violently hurled body's flight has the greatest power and delivers the strongest percussion. In a long analysis he explains that the projectile drives the air before it, generating circular movements with the weight always at their center, just as a stone dropped in water makes circles about the point struck, so the air ahead is set in motion and offers less resistance, like a boat that moves easily once the water begins to arch into waves. As the ball's first strength fails and its course bends, the escape prepared by the fleeing air no longer serves and resistance grows; a closing note adds that because no place can be empty, the space a boat leaves closes again and presses it forward, as when a cherry stone is squeezed between the fingers.

Air driven into circles, like rings around a stone in water
The weight drives the air from its place and thereby slows itself somewhat; the pushed air pushes further air, generating circular movements with the moving weight always at their center, just as circles in water have the place struck by the stone as their center. The air ahead is thus prepared for movement, so the weight finds less resistance and redoubles its course, like a boat that moves with difficulty at first but easily once the water arches into waves.

Three points, a, b and c, lie along the straight trajectory; at c the ball departs from the straight and falls toward the ground, while concentric arcs of disturbed air expand about the line.
No place can be empty: the boat pressed forward
Because no place can be empty, the water where the boat started tends to close again, and this makes a force that presses and thrusts the boat forward. The action is compared to the stone of a cherry squeezed and shot out between the fingers.
