Measuring heights and distances with a ground square; fire trebuchet
A sighting method by similar triangles (P, a, m, b, c, f, n) and a ship-burning trabocco
A large diagram at the top demonstrates how to measure heights, widths and distances without moving one's feet, using a perfect square laid on the ground and sight-lines from its angles m and n to a tower's foot and summit. The method reduces the unknown to counting how many times one labelled segment 'enters' another, worked through to a tower one and a half braccia into the far segment, and is called a just and good rule. At the lower right a fire-throwing trebuchet (trabocco) hurls bundles of burning logs, chained with thin iron, against ships, together with pitch or bombard powder, straw and vinegar.

Measuring a tower by a ground square (P, a, m, b, c, f, n)
A perfect square is set on the ground; sighting from angle m to the tower's foot and from angle n to its summit p, the distance and height follow from how many times b a enters a c and b c enters c n. The note works a case to a height of exactly one and a half braccia and calls it a just and good rule.
Fire-throwing trebuchet against ships
A trebuchet at the lower right casts a mass of burning logs, woven together with slender iron chains, at ships; the note adds pitch, or else stones, or bombard powder mixed with straw and vinegar.
