A flapping-wing apparatus and a net-and-cane wing that opens on the up-stroke

The lettered linkage sets out how the wing is driven: a b c makes the part m n rise quickly on the up-stroke, while d e f drives m n down so the wing does its work. The operator lowers the wing r t with the feet by stretching the legs, and raises and turns it by hand at v S.
Device to rotate the wing only
A small central sketch isolates a way of making the wing merely rotate as it is raised and lowered. It separates the twisting action of the wing from its main flapping stroke.
Valved wing of net stretched between canes
A wing built of canes carries a net (labels a c f, b d) that is fully perforated when raised, so b parts from a and d from c and the air gives way, and closes when it falls as b returns to a and c to d. The net tied to the upper canes forms a good framework, and the course should run from a to f so the air meets no obstacle.
