Muscle power multiplied through treadle-levers, a belt-pull and a head-thrust, summed step by step
Leonardo works out how much force a single man can concentrate through a lever apparatus: seated on treadle-like levers, pulling with a belt and pushing with his head, he tallies 200 pounds of body weight, 225 from the hand-and-belt roller, and 200 from the head-thrust to reach 625, then doubles it with a 2-to-1 foot-lever to claim 1,250 pounds delivered quickly over half a braccio of travel. The lower sketch shows the seated operator bracing head and feet against the rig, with a detail of the winding roller in an oval. The apparatus and its counter-winding cords are drawn to accompany the calculation.

Force multiplication: from 200 pounds of body weight to 1,250 pounds
The man weighs 200 pounds; the belt-pull, geared 9/8 against 1/8 on its roller, turns 25 pounds of hand-force into 225; the head-thrust adds 200, for a sum of 625. A foot-lever of two parts against one then doubles this to 1,250 pounds, delivered quickly with only half a braccio of movement.
Counter-winding roller and belt drive
The mechanism is arranged so that as one cord of the roller (subbio) winds on, the other unwinds. The belt at the waist pulls against this roller while the feet press the treadle-lever, coordinating the several forces named in the calculation.
