Box-wheel engine, non-recoiling bombard, and a mantlet
A weight-shifting wheel with hinged boxes, a ship gun that will not kick, and an armoured screen
The sheet gathers several devices. At top right a crossed-out figure studies easy "bilichi" (pivots); a bombard is shown whose hollowed tail is shaped so the gun will not drive back the ship on which it is mounted; and a double-beamed mantlet lets one advance safely against a bastion's artillery. The largest study is a "ruota a cassette," a wheel ringed with hinged boxes and a spring-loaded pawl (fattorino) that shift as the wheel turns; Leonardo notes that if the box touching the lower wheel n halts the motion, doubling the number of boxes restores movement, with letter labels a, b, m, n marking the box and its notches.

Doubling the boxes to keep the wheel turning
Leonardo observes that if the box touching the lower wheel n stops the motion, doubling the whole number of boxes will restore movement to the wheel. The study belongs to his attempts at a self-moving, weight-shifting wheel.
