Each footstep in still water sends a wave to the shore; how a shadow falls beneath its body
Three studies, beginning with a wavy section of dead water: a horse, man, or animal wading through still water of medium depth makes the water surge up and cover the shore ahead, each step raising a wave that runs to the bank, and on leaving the water it rushes swiftly back to its place. A second sketch of two vessels joined by tubes (wine in e, water in f) proposes an experiment to observe at the intersection c d what proportion at a b belongs to their mixture, before the heading "Shadow and light." The last study, with eye, shadow, and candle (a b c), shows that if the line of sight to the shadow makes an equal angle with the shadow, the shadow seems to lie as far beneath the plane as the body rises above it — like a reflection in water — so that c b lies under the wall as much as b a stands above it.

If the visual line to the shadow makes an equal angle with the shadow, the shadow appears to fall beneath the body that casts it, as bodies mirrored in water appear as far below as above; so c b lies beneath the plane as far as b a stands above it.
