The whole pupil sees: refuting the single-point of vision
The needle-and-pinhole experiment against the perspectivists' visual point
Headed 'Eye of man', this sheet attacks the perspectivists' claim that all images reduce to a single point in the eye where judgment is made. Leonardo describes looking through a millet-sized hole pierced in paper while moving a needle held close to the eye: its shadow beyond the hole moves the opposite way, proving that visual power is spread over the whole pupil, since points S and t of the pupil each see the needle at q and p. He then rebuts the adversary's point-vision reply by appeal to the rule that vision through a uniform medium travels in straight lines.

Visual power is spread over the whole pupil, not a point
Against the perspectivists, who say all images come to the eye in a pyramid reduced to an angle where judgment is made, experience shows the contrary. The visual power is spread through the whole pupil, and in every point of it the images of objects are known; were it not so, the experiment could not work.
The needle-and-pinhole experiment
Pierce a millet-sized hole with a thick needle in a paper held a third or quarter of a braccio before the eye and look through hole r at the open air. Interpose a needle close to the eye, touching the lashes, and move it up, down, right and left: its likeness beyond the hole moves contrary to your hand. Let S t be the pupil, a b c d the paper with hole r, and n the needle moving to m.
Why the shadow inverts, and the point g of crossing
When the needle is high at n, its likeness passes through hole r and occupies the air below at q; when it descends to m, the likeness rises from q to p, the straight lines of the image crossing always at point g. If visual power were not at S you would not see the needle at q, nor at p without power at t, and the same holds for every part of the pupil.
Reply to the adversary's single-point claim
The adversary says vision is made at a point r that would give the same result. He forgets the ninth proposition of the first book: every vision through a uniform medium goes by a straight line. The needle a before r occupies point m by the line r m, and when it descends to n it occupies f by the line r f. Thus our proposition is concluded.
