Why the owl sees by night: pupil size and the brain's chamber
Comparing man and eagle-owl by the range of their pupils and the size of the imprensiva
Headed 'Of the eye of man', this text page contrasts nocturnal and diurnal animals. Leonardo argues that the eagle-owl sees by night because its pupil can grow tenfold in diameter (a hundredfold in area) against man's fourfold, while its brain-chamber, the imprensiva, is barely larger than its pupil, whereas in man the imprensiva outweighs the pupil ten-thousandfold, like a great hall lit by a small hole beside a small hall standing open. A second note shows that a larger pupil makes a thing appear larger and brighter, tested by viewing a star through a pinhole with one eye and with the naked other.

The nocturnal pupil dilates far more than the diurnal
Nocturnal animals see more by night than by day because their pupil grows and shrinks far more than a diurnal animal's. If man's pupil doubles its diameter at night, meaning four times the day's area, the eagle-owl's pupil grows ten times the day's diameter, in sum a hundred times the day's pupil.
The imprensiva of man against that of the owl
In man the brain-ventricle called the imprensiva is more than ten times the whole eye, whose pupil is less than a thousandth of the eye; in the owl the night pupil is larger than its imprensiva. So man's imprensiva exceeds his pupil ten-thousandfold, while the owl's is nearly equal, and fuller causes will be shown by anatomy of the eyes of the two.
A great hall lit by a small hole
Man's imprensiva compared to the owl's is like a great hall with light through a small hole beside a small hall standing wholly open: in the great hall it is night at midday, and in the small open one it is day at midnight, the weather being clear.
A larger pupil makes a thing look larger and brighter
Look at a star through the smallest pinhole in a paper held close to one eye: only a small part of the pupil works, and the star looks tiny amid much sky. With the other, naked eye it looks large, so you see the star twice at once, small and large. The whole sun can be seen dim through the hole, splendour shrinking with magnitude; great pupils see little by day because excess light hinders sight.
