Notebook D: rectilinear vision, the visual faculty spread through the whole pupil, and advice to painters
Leonardo holds that the species of objects are diffused throughout all the air facing them, all in the whole and all in every part, and that vision is rectilinear because a straight line can be drawn from the eye to each part of the seen air, and (citing Aristotle) because every natural action takes the shortest path. Against the 'perspective painters', he insists the visual faculty is not concentrated in a point but spread through the whole pupil and a larger space behind it, images being clearer the nearer they fall to its centre. Because of this diffusion the eye can never fix the true edge of a remote body: the extreme c of an object is scattered across the field between d and h, so the estimative faculty receives only a confused boundary. He draws the lesson for painters that near objects should be figured with edges less distinct than far ones. Objects have their species diffused in all the air they face, all in the whole and all in every part of it. Vision is rectilinear because a straight line can be drawn from the eye to each part of the seen air, and because, as Aristotle says, every natural action is done in the shortest way possible, that is, the straight line.
The visual faculty is not a point, contra the perspective painters
The visual faculty is not in a point, as the perspective painters would have it, but is spread through the whole pupil where the species enter, and occupies a greater space within the eye; images are the more distinct the nearer they lie to the centre of that faculty, and the less so the farther from it.
The eye cannot fix a remote edge
Let the pupil be a b, the body before it c p with upper extreme c, and n m the field where c should be seen. The central line r sees c at f, the upper part S sees it at h, the lowest part at d, so c is scattered across the field d h; hence the extreme is not truly known, and the estimative faculty receives only a confused boundary.
Advice to painters on soft near edges
The edges of drawn things, being joined to the field on which they are figured, are not subject to this defect; so paintings near the eye must be figured with edges less distinct than the edges of remote things. Judge the upper edge of an object brought close to the eye and then moved away to sense this.
