Dredging machine for excavating marsh mud onto boats
A crank-driven, geared dredger on twin boats that lifts mud from the marsh bed
The sheet designs a machine for excavating earth, drawn as a dredge mounted across two boats with a central spoked wheel. Turning the handle n drives a pinion that turns the toothed wheel f, which is joined to a cross of buckets (casse) that scoop mud from the swamp and discharge it onto the boats; ropes m f and m b wind on pole f to walk the whole rig forward toward m. Leonardo declines to compute the power here but argues the device's value lies in saving time, since the buckets always carry earth upward and never return empty. A marginal note observes that the pole can descend as far as the wheel must reach the marsh bottom.
