The Descent of Birds: Simple and Compound Obliquity
How birds descend to a chosen place, and how a side-wind meets the windward wing
This page of Notebook E continues the study of birds (Volatili) with an analysis of how a bird descends to alight. Leonardo distinguishes a certain descent onto one fixed place from an ambiguous descent hovering over several places, and classifies the line of descent as simple, compound, or decomposed obliquity, illustrated by small line-diagrams in the margin. A further passage with an arc-diagram shows how a side-wind striking a bird's flank is countered by the faster beat of the windward wing, which keeps the straight course. Bird sketches and geometric line-figures accompany the text down the right side.

Two natures of a bird's descent
Leonardo says the descent of birds is of two kinds: one certain, onto a single determined place, made with the wings open and their tips raised higher than the back so the bird comes down in a straight, simple obliquity; the other ambiguous, over two or more places, made with the wing-tips held lower and the breast and tail bending now right, now left. This second, wandering descent uses sometimes simple, sometimes compound, and at times decomposed obliquity.
Three degrees of obliquity in the line of descent
Three small line-figures in the margin set out the geometry of a bending descent path. A straight, simple obliquity runs between the points b and a; a compound (angled) obliquity between d and c; and a decomposed obliquity of curves and counter-curves between f and c.
A side-wind and the faster windward wing
For a bird a b c moving along line a f with the wind d e striking its flank on wing a b, Leonardo argues the windward wing beats faster than the wind and so is not carried off course. The wind that strikes the side rebounds with a whirling motion toward that wing, giving it a second support against being bent; the swifter beat of the struck wing, together with this rebound, keeps the bird's course straight.
