Why Raising the Wing Is Slower; the Kite's Circling Rise
Rest between wingbeats, and how a bird spirals up on the wind
This page explains why the upstroke of a bird's wing is always slower than the downstroke: the wearied limbs need rest, and once impetus is built up over a long motion the bird need only have raised its wings before that impetus begins to decline. When it wishes to go fast, it renews the impetus nearer its start and beats more often, longer, and swifter. Leonardo then analyses the circling rise of the kite (nibbio): one wing is held upwind while the other keeps to the wind's straight line and a horn of the tail is dropped toward the centre, slowing the inner side and driving the bird up in a spiral to the top of the wind. The upstroke is slower than the downstroke
The flight of birds is always slower in raising the wings than in lowering them, owing to the rest the tired limbs need after their recent labour. Speed is unnecessary on the upstroke because the impetus, built up over a long motion, still carries the bird; it suffices to have raised the wings before the impetus declines. To go fast, the bird renews the impetus nearer its beginning and beats faster and longer.
The kite's circling rise on the wind
Leonardo explains the spiralling ascent birds make above the wind: with one wing they enter upwind while the other keeps to the wind's straight line, and they lower one horn of the tail toward the centre of the circular motion. The wind striking within slows the lower, inner side—the cause of the circular motion—while the windward wing lifts the bird to the topmost height of the wind.
