Small figures whirl most; deep-sinking things obey the eddies least

Across the sheet Leonardo works out how river eddies move the objects they carry: the smaller a figure, the greater its whirling, because great eddies are rare in rivers while small ones are almost innumerable, and small things are turned by both large and small eddies. Of objects equal in length and breadth, those that sink deeper whirl less, for the revolutions vary greatly from surface to bottom, so a deep-sinking thing is beset by many conflicting whirls and obeys none, or only the most powerful; a marginal note repeats that the deeper an object sinks the less it obeys the water's revolutions. Smaller figures are whirled more than large ones
Of things carried by water, the one of smaller figure has the greater whirling, because the great revolutions of eddies are rare in the courses of rivers while the small eddies are almost innumerable. Large things are whirled only by great eddies, but small things are turned about by both small and great.
The deeper a thing sinks, the fewer whirls act on it
Of objects equal in length and breadth, those that sink deeper have fewer revolutions, for the whirls vary greatly from the surface to the bottom. A deep-sinking thing is beset by many differing heights of revolution and so remains in doubt, often obeying none, or if it obeys, obeying only the most powerful.
Marginal note: deeper objects obey the water least
A note in the margin restates the rule: of things equal in figure and quantity, the one that sinks deeper obeys the revolutions of the water the less.
