A full page of continuous prose in which Leonardo asks whether the rubbing together of the celestial spheres produces sound, and argues that it cannot. Sound requires air struck against a dense body, yet there is no air between the heavens; moreover such friction would long ago have consumed the spheres given their immense daily velocity, and could not spread even if it occurred. He reasons that polished bodies rub silently, that rough spheres would leave a vacuum (which nature forbids), and concludes the friction and its sound must cease, so 'the dancers would stop.'

Every sound is caused by air struck against a dense body, and friction between two heavy bodies acts through the surrounding air and consumes them. Polished bodies rub without sound; rough spheres in contact would generate a vacuum, which is concluded not to occur in nature.
