Cold mirrors and glass balls reflect rays hotter than fire, showing heat comes from the first cause

Leonardo proposes an experiment comparing a red-hot loaf of copper with a bright flame at equal distance from the mirror, showing that the greater heat, not the greater light, yields a hotter reflection. He concludes that it is not the sun's splendour that heats, but its natural heat.
