Headed 'Book 42: on rains', the page examines how rain behaves as it falls: sometimes it grows so light through friction with the air that it seems to turn into air; sometimes it multiplies by absorbing the minute droplets it meets; and winds can bend it into a slow, oblique descent so fine that it hangs suspended in the air. Leonardo then lists a program of things to write: how clouds form and dissolve, what raises water vapours from the earth into the air, the causes of mists and thickened air, why the sky looks more or less blue, the regions of the air, and the causes of snow, hail and the freezing of water into ice. He also wants to explain how frost builds new figures of snow and of leaves and grass, almost as if it were dew nourishing them. A small radiant sun is sketched at the upper left.
