Why the reflected sun appears continuous across the sea, and where reflected rays overlap and brighten
Titled 'Perspective of solar rays,' this optical page explains why sunlight reflected off wavy water makes the sun's image appear as an unbroken streak across the whole surface between viewer and sun. With the sun at a and the wavy surface b c, Leonardo shows that each wave reflects the sun's image to a distinct point along the line d t, so together they light the whole span, becoming discontinuous only at a distance. A second figure shows reflected images widening with length and overlapping in c b, where the light is twice as bright.

The sun's image continuous over wavy water
With the sun at a and the wavy water b c, each wave between the extremes reflects the sun's image to its own point along the line d t (the 'universe'), so the whole line is lit and the reflected sun appears continuous, breaking up only at some distance.
Reflected images overlap and double the light
The image reflected from wave to object widens with every degree of length; image f rebounds into c d and wave-image e into a b, and where these two reflections superimpose (in c b) the light is twice as luminous as in a c or b d.
