Of Tackles and Ropes: Speed, Load and Breakage
The faster rope of a tackle feels the most weight and breaks first at its support
Continuing his study of tackles, Leonardo ranks the ropes of a pulley system by the force they can exert: the last rope does less than the penultimate, which does less than the antepenultimate, which does less than the first. Marginal pulley sketches accompany three lettered propositions. He states that the faster a rope moves the more weight it feels, so the slower rope feels less and its side of the tackle rises less. From this he deduces where the rope will break: the mover's rope, being fastest, feels the most weight and so breaks at its start against the first pulley, and nearest its upper support.

Ranking the ropes of a tackle by their power
The penultimate rope can do more than the last and less than the antepenultimate, and the antepenultimate less than the first. So the load on the last rope is far less able to resist the mover on the first rope than that mover is able to move the load on the last rope.
The faster rope feels more weight and lifts its side higher
First: one rope of the tackle feels more weight the faster it is, so the slower rope feels less. Second: that side of the tackle rises more which is moved by the faster rope, and rises less which is moved by the slower rope.
The mover's rope breaks first, at the first pulley
Where the rope of the tackle breaks: a rope of uniform strength always breaks at the start where the mover's rope meets the first pulley. Being fastest it feels the most weight, and the rope that feels most weight breaks soonest, and soonest in the part nearest its upper support.
