The eyes of animals: how pupils respond to light
Nocturnal birds, the leonine species and man compared; a call to dissect the eye
Leonardo studies how the pupils of animals dilate and contract with the light of the sun. In nocturnal birds, owls, barn owls and tawny owls, the pupil can grow to fill almost the whole eye or shrink to a grain of millet, always staying circular, while the 'leonine' species, panthers, leopards, lynxes, tigers and Spanish cats, contract the pupil from a perfect circle to a biangular figure shown in the margin. Man, weaker of sight, is less harmed by strong light, whereas the great horned owl sees in near-darkness better than we do at midday. Small marginal diagrams (three circles n m o; a circle with the biangular a a c) illustrate the pupil forms, and a note urges dissecting eyes to find the muscles that open and close the pupil.

Pupils dilating and contracting with light
The pupils of all animals grow and diminish with the greater or lesser light of the sun. In nocturnal birds the pupil may fill almost the whole eye or shrink to a millet grain, always circular. Man, being weaker-sighted, is less harmed by excess light, while the great horned owl has more visual vigour in darkness than we have at midday.
Call to dissect the muscles of the eye
A marginal instruction directs the reader to make anatomy of various eyes and to see which are the muscles that open and close the pupils of the eyes of animals.
