Bending of arched supports and a gravel-and-water study
How much each part of a bent strut moves, and which side arches toward its centre.
In red chalk the sheet studies how loaded supports bend. Two upright posts carry a strut that curves under load, lettered b a, c, n o m and f p, with the note that the part of a continuous body farthest from the least-moving part moves most (for a c m n, a m moves least and c n most). A second, curved support below is said to bend into an arch toward its centre, its upper part the more loaded. A small figure of gravel and water is sketched at the upper left.

Curved support bends toward its centre
A curved support lettered a m and n o is shown. The note states that the side of the support bends into an arch toward its centre, and that its upper part is the more heavily loaded.
