The note transcribed for this leaf describes the behaviour of air trapped in water: air gently enclosed just below the surface rises again with little force, carrying a coat of water and floating as a half-sphere of equal weight, whereas air forced under with impetus bursts back through the surface and runs straight like wind from a bellows. The sheet itself is headed by a pen-and-red-chalk sketch of two beams crossing and gripping a curved collar, flanked by red-chalk plan and elevation studies. Its lower, inverted portion bears further short lines of Latin grammatical writing not included in the transcription.

Air enclosed and released beneath the water surface
The transcribed note describes how water that gently encloses air just below its surface lets that air rise again with little force. Carrying a coat of water of equal weight, the bubble then floats as a half-sphere upon the surface.
Impetus drives submerged air violently out
When the air is instead forced under with impetus, it is pressed by its own weight over the length of its submerged path. It bursts back through the surface and runs straight like wind from a bellows, rather than floating clothed in water.
