Water accelerating through a constriction
Leonardo states that water falling from a narrow channel into a wide one moves faster the greater the height of its fall compared with its own thickness. The upper sketch renders this as streamlines that draw together and cross at a narrow throat before spreading out again.
A depression in the water surface
A heading marks a study of a hollow, or sagging, in a mass of water. The lower drawing shows a curved surface profile that dips and rises as it meets a vertical boundary at the right.
