Red chalk study, with fainter secondary figure sketches at the left edge
A finished red chalk study of a young woman shown from the head to the bust, her face turned down and to her left with lowered eyes and a gentle expression. The hair is drawn smoothly back from a central parting and the wide, low neckline of a soft gown is modelled in light and shadow. Along the left margin fainter, unfinished sketches of smaller draped figures and heads are laid in more lightly. Old inventory numbers appear in the upper corners and a collector's stamp sits at lower right.

Downcast head and bust of a young woman
The principal figure is a young woman modelled in red chalk, seen to just below the shoulders. Her head inclines down and to her left with half-lowered eyes, the hair pulled back over the ears, and the broad rounded neckline of her gown described with soft hatching.
Fainter subsidiary sketches at left
Along the left edge the sheet carries lighter, more summary sketches of smaller draped figures and heads, apparently trial or subsidiary studies. They are left unfinished and much fainter than the main head.
