Falling weights, and why the moon does not shine like the sun
Weights descending to the centre of the world; the sun mirrored in water and the light of the full moon
The left page (f.107v) sets out propositions on how heavy bodies fall toward the centre of the world, comparing descent along more and less oblique lines and the balancing of weights and their pendants on a pair of scales, with lettered diagrams (a, b, c, d, g) and a row of four small figures bearing numbers. The right page (f.104r) turns to optics and astronomy: the image of the sun in still and in rippling water, why the moon cannot mirror the sun evenly, and diagrams of the full moon ('quintadecima') set between the earth and the sun. Leonardo argues that the moon shines dully because its light is caught only on the crests and hollows of a sea-like, wave-covered surface. Several of the figures carry further numeric labels and short notes that are not transcribed in the source.

A heavy body seeks the centre of the world
A fluid body cannot resist anything heavier than itself, and a weight meeting no resistance seeks the lowest place; since nothing in the universe is lower than its centre, a weight that descends freely comes to rest at the centre of the world, its opposing weights left equal.
Descent along more and less oblique lines
Leonardo compares two paths of descent: in the strong obliquity b a the weight o halts at its middle, perpendicular above the centre, having travelled little, while along the line a g the weight n stops after a longer path. He concludes that the shorter motion belongs to the weight descending by the more oblique line.
Balance arms and their pendants
No weight stays on its support unless the central line of its weight touches the front of that support, and here the shorter pendant makes the weight heavier. Unequal weights that balance each other on the scales do not leave the beam at equal angles to one another.
The sun's image in still and rippling water
The waves of water enlarge the image of whatever is mirrored in them, and it is impossible for the sun's image on a spherical body to occupy half of that sphere. He directs that the two cases be drawn apart from one another, the waving water separated from the still.
Why the moon does not shine like the sun
The moon does not shine with its reflected light as the sun does, because it catches the sun's light not evenly across its surface but only on the crests and hollows of the waves of its waters. Mingled with the shadows on those shining waves, the sun is confusedly mirrored, so the moon's light is not bright and clear like the sun's.
The moon at the fifteenth (full moon)
Small diagrams set the earth between the moon and the sun, and the moon between the earth and the sun, at the 'quintadecima' or fifteenth day. In one the sun stands in the west and the moon in the east; in another the moon has the sun to the east and the earth to the west.
