Statics of cords and supports: how weight is shared
Straight versus slanting cords, upright versus oblique props, and the arms of the balance
Leonardo analyses how suspended weights load the cords and props that carry them. A cord running straight from its support to the load bears the whole weight, while cords meeting it at an angle bear only themselves, and a forked cord divides the load in proportion to its two angles. He then distinguishes upright supports, which feel no force, from oblique ones, whose force grows with their slant, and lays out the real and potential arms of a balance. Pulley blocks and hanging weights are drawn in the margins to illustrate the statics.

A straight cord carries the whole load; slanting cords carry only themselves
A cord running straight from support g q to the weight f bears the entire load, while a cord p o joining it at an angle bears nothing. If p o did bear weight the straight line would be bent, which is impossible; whatever breaks the straightness must itself take up part of the weight.
A branched cord divides the weight in proportion to its angles
A weight hung from a cord n m that splits into two branches n a and n q makes two angles m n q and m n a. The branch on the larger angle carries the more weight, and if the angles are equal the branches share the load equally.
Upright supports feel no force; oblique supports feel force by their slant
Supports standing vertically under a load bear it without feeling any force, whereas supports set obliquely feel an added force in proportion to their obliquity. The upright supports a and n are free of force until their feet are spread apart.
Real and potential arms of the balance (third demonstration)
The rectangular arms and appendages of a balance are laid out: a b is the potential arm for the real support a f, joined at a right angle to the appendage b c that carries weight c. The lower figure defines a weight hung on four cords, the weight c counting the same in the lower angle as in the upper.
