Continuing his analysis of the digging machine, and worked with the page turned on its side, Leonardo now catalogues its losses. He reckons that a wheel of ten braccia diameter, turned through 31 3/7 paces, pulls only 3 1/7 braccia of rope for one full turn, so that seven men do the office of only two and a half. A further note counts how one spadeful of earth passes through three hands before reaching the box, and a long list finds the wheel deficient in eight things, beginning with a six-braccia semi-diameter that does the office of only two.
