Impetus and percussion in the rebound of a moving body
Height gained in the bounce set in proportion to the length of the reflected motion
This sheet is a sustained study of impact and rebound. A lettered figure labels that which is gained in height in the bounce, and the surrounding text argues that the power of the impetus lasts throughout the whole reflected motion and ends at the beginning of the natural motion. Leonardo repeats, in several rephrasings, that the moving body rises only as far as the power of the percussion accompanies it. He concludes with a proportion: the power of the impetus stands to the power of the percussion as the height of the reflected motion stands to its length.

Height gained in the bounce
A lettered figure marks that which is gained in height in the bounce. It frames the rebound of a struck body as a measurable rise above the point of impact.
Impetus endures through the reflected motion
The power of the impetus lasts throughout the whole reflected motion and ends at the beginning of the natural motion. The rise of the body accompanies the power of the percussion only up to the summit of its bounce.
The proportion of impetus to percussion
Leonardo concludes that the power of the impetus has the same proportion to the power of the percussion as the height of the reflected motion has to its length: all the length comes from the impetus, all the height from the blow.
