The boiling of water and the geometry of the point
Fire turning water to air, bubbles, river-welling, candle smoke; and the indivisible point
On folio 160v Leonardo studies heat and water: water touching the heated vessel turns into air mixed with fire, bubbles are driven out by the weight of the water above them, and water rises from a riverbed either by slow welling, by a bellows, or by fire heating it from below. A small lettered circle tracks a wheel through a half-turn, and a note compares the reflected smoke of an extinguished candle with reflected water-waves. Folio 159r is a philosophical geometry of magnitude, arguing that the point is indivisible and therefore 'nothing,' then rebuilding point, line, surface and body through motion. A marginal note also records rings and a gold clasp set with jewels, and further untranscribed writing fills much of the sheet.

Boiling water converted into air mixed with fire
Water in contact with the bottom of a heated vessel is at once turned into air mixed with fire. Because the hottest air rises highest, this exhalation of the water penetrates the low region of the air it touches and is carried up with the element of fire as that fire returns to its own sphere.
Why bubbles leap out of the boiling vessel
The bubbles of boiling water are driven out of their vessel by the weight of the water resting upon them. This force is swifter than the plain air rising from the bottom of marshes in proportion to its greater quantity and greater heat.
Three ways water rises from a riverbed
Water wells up from a river bottom in three ways: by a slow natural rising, by being driven up as if by a bellows, or by fire heating it from below so that it vaporizes and rises with a continuous welling.

A small lettered circle marks the rotation of a wheel: when c is at a, a is at c, and thus the wheel and its moving body have completed half a turn.
Smoke of an extinguished candle versus water-waves
The smoke of a snuffed candle is denser at its edges than in the middle because it recoils inward from the cold air, being able both to rarefy and to condense. Water behaves otherwise: unable to rarefy or condense itself, its reflected part forms a wave that travels back over the oncoming water in a contrary motion.
The point, line and surface as 'nothing'
Since the point is indivisible and has no middle, it is bounded by nothing and so is itself nothing, on which no science can rest; to escape this Leonardo redefines the point as that than which nothing can be smaller. The line is then the path of a moving point, the surface the crosswise motion of a line, and the body the product of motion. Treated only as boundaries, the point and the surface alike are argued to be 'nothing.'
