How a bird takes flight and soars against the wind
Gaining impetus by a descent, flying edge-on, and rising on the wind like a wedge
Folio 166v, headed 'without wind,' analyses how a bird takes flight and rides the wind. It rises most easily by starting with a slight descent to gain impetus, flies against the wind along an oblique line entering beneath it, and advances against the thin air met by the shoulders of its wings rather than the larger body of air below. To climb it enters above the wind, lowers its tail and wing-elbows, raises its shoulders, and is lifted like a weight on a wedge, soaring without beating its wings until the impetus is spent. Folio 163r adds that moving the air against a still bird is equivalent to moving the bird against still air. The transmitted-light image is very faint, and further untranscribed text is present.

Taking flight and gaining ground against the wind
A bird rises most easily when it begins with a slight descent to gather impetus. Flying against the wind it must advance along a line oblique toward the earth, entering under the wind, moving against the thin air that meets the shoulders of its wings, which resists least, rather than the larger body of air beneath them.
Soaring into the wind without beating the wings
To climb, the bird enters above the wind and spends the impetus won in its descent, lowering its tail and the elbows of its wings and raising its shoulders. The wind passing beneath lifts it as a wedge lifts a weight, and it holds its wings edge-on so that least air resists; when the impetus is spent it drops again to regain it. Circular flight is said to follow other rules, promised later.
Moving the air against the bird equals moving the bird
It is as much to move the air against a motionless bird as to move the bird against still air. From this equivalence Leonardo proposes to reason further, the passage breaking off mid-sentence.
