Descent toward the centre of the world; falling water keeps its quantity
The left page (217v) argues that all free descent of heavy bodies is directed toward the centre of the world, and explores the indivisibility of the instant against the divisibility of time, using triangle diagrams (a b c, with cuts d e f and g h i) that relate a mover's motion to that of the moving bodies. Free descent aims at the centre of the world
The motion of every free descent made by heavy bodies is directed toward the centre of the world, if the motions are equally swift.
Indivisible instant, divisible time
In the triangle a b c (a b equal to a c), the cut d e f halves each side and g h i cuts each at a quarter; when the mover's line and the first moving body's line begin at right angles, the line of positions r f g is straight. No motion is so slow that a point of rest is found in it, since motion is divisible together with time.
Falling water keeps its quantity
Water that falls neither thins nor lessens its quantity in any part of its descent, so in every part an equal weight of water passes in an equal time. Were more water to enter a place than leaves it, all the water in the world would in time gather there, since two casks entering and one poured out would pile up as many casks as points counted in the time.
Sand analogy: transverse versus natural motion
The proportion of the side a b to the side a g is that of the transverse motion to the natural motion. When the sower of sand, spreading it evenly along his path, moves faster than the sand's own descent, his motion is longer than that descent in the same proportion as it is faster.
