Machines, a hoist, and a fluted column
Ink studies over faint pencil notes on the impetus and motion of water and wind
The sheet gathers several mechanical studies in ink over a scatter of faint pencil sketches: a large cylinder mounted lengthwise on a wooden trestle and driven by a toothed wheel, a bucket-like hopper or hoist slung from a crossed bar at the top, and a tall fluted column with a decorated capital and base at the right. The e-Leo transcription records only the single word 'questo' at the foot of the page. Cylinder machine on a trestle bench
A long cylinder is mounted horizontally on a low wooden trestle and turned by a spoked, toothed wheel set at its end. The framing of legs and cross-pieces is drawn in firm ink, suggesting a rolling, milling or pressing mechanism.
Hopper or hoist with a crossed bar
Near the top of the sheet a hooped bucket or hopper hangs beneath a crossed bar and bracket, as if part of a lifting or crane arrangement. It sits among several lighter mechanical jottings.
Fluted column with capital and base
A tall fluted column stands at the right of the sheet, carefully shaded, with an ornamented capital carrying a small ball finial and a moulded, banded base. It is the most finished element on the page.
