Friction and the Dragging of Weights by Inclined Cords

The main study analyses a weight m dragged across a plane by cords a, b, c, d of increasing obliquity, showing how much of the load each cord sustains and how much is opposed only by friction. Leonardo repeatedly states his rule that friction is always a quarter of the weight dragged, and that the load grows lighter as the pull approaches the perpendicular. Further figures treat a beam lifted by a pulley and the distinction between real and 'potential' weight, while a note in the upper corner gives a recipe for dyeing cloth with tinted egg and herb juice.

Friction reckoned as a quarter of the dragged weight
Leonardo assigns the load of weight m among the cords: a sustains all 4 pounds but does not rub, b sustains 3, c sustains 2, and d sustains none but handles one by friction with power equal to a quarter of m. He states as a rule that friction is always a quarter of the weight dragged, and that the weight grows lighter the nearer the pull comes to the perpendicular falling upon it.
Load distributed among cords of increasing obliquity
With cord d, whose power equals a quarter of m, the weight is dragged with a power of one pound; from c it drags with a quarter of the two pounds remaining in m, the appendage m c lifting two pounds. Leonardo shows that although the demonstration seems to require two and a half pounds, only half a pound above the two of c actually moves the weight.
A beam raised by a pulley: real versus potential weight
The front of beam a b weighs at a with a power of one, put into a power of 4 by the cord pulling along the obliquity a n. The resisting 4 pounds finds only one pound of real weight, the rest being potential weight without heaviness, so that the power of 4 lifts the beam's foot.
Recipe for dyeing cloth with tinted egg
A short technical note in the upper corner directs dyeing cloths by smearing them with tinted egg mixed with yolk, then washing with water that dissolves the cooked egg, and mixing herb juice with the egg. It is a materials recipe for colouring drapery rather than a mechanical study.
