The 30 aspects of a lunation, and why there are as many images of the sun as viewing eyes
Two circular diagrams of orbits around the earth chart the phases the moon shows against a sun that sets each evening: at full moon, opposite the setting sun, the moon's visible face is wholly lit, and the sheet lays out the roughly thirty aspects that complete one lunation. Full moon opposite the setting sun (a...n, full moon)
When the sun stands in the west, the full moon is in the east, and the face it always turns to us is wholly illuminated. Each evening the setting sun finds the moon before it in one of these aspects.
The thirty aspects of a lunation (1-20)
These are the aspects the moon takes with the sun as the sun sets each evening. Beginning with the moon in the east and the sun in the west, Leonardo follows the daily changes over the fifteen days until both are in the west, and on until the moon again faces the setting sun, completing one lunar month.
As many images of the sun as viewing eyes
Leonardo sets out to prove that there are as many images of the sun in the water as there are positions of eyes that see it there. He imagines eyes arranged in a circle around a pool with the sun at the zenith.
The earth as a luminary seen from the moon
If the eye were as large as the world, or the world diminished by distance to the size of the eye, our earth would appear a celestial luminary to anyone on the moon or another star. This is offered as the conclusion of the water-reflection studies.
