The Soaring Bird: Wind, Wings and the Steering Tail
Flight studies on how a bird rides the wind, with propositions on the diminution of size with distance
The upper sheet is a dense study of soaring flight: how a bird holds the wind beneath its wings like a wedge, twists its tail to keep from overturning, and rises in circles without beating its wings. Small labelled sketches distinguish a bird pushed downward, evenly, or upward, and diagrams show how it climbs and dives against a wind blowing from a to b. The lower fragment carries a wholly different content: optical-perspective propositions on how equal things appear diminished in proportion to their distance from the eye, and, upside down in a corner, a bitter personal note arguing a family quarrel over an inheritance, money lent on the Botro, and the rights of heirs. The sheet bears extensive further writing consistent with the transcribed blocks.

The centre of gravity as the pole of the bird's balance
The bird's centre of gravity becomes the pole of its balance. Rising in circles on a single wind without beating its wings, it holds the wind's impetus beneath its wings, which lifts it like a wedge. When the wind strikes under the left wing and passes over the right, the tail is at once twisted so the wind forms a contrary wedge and turns the bird, always curving upward because thrust from below.
Three modes: the bird pushed down, evenly and upward
Labelled figures mark a bird 'pushed downward,' 'pushed evenly,' and 'pushed upward.' One rises because it has the wind beneath it; another no longer rises because it has lost the wind below; a third descends because the wind is above. All three descend or rise with equal motion of the whole animal together with its extremities.
How the bird climbs and dives against the wind (a, b, q, c, d)
The air or wind comes from a to b; the bird rises along the line q b, then descends along the line c d, then rises again by the same wind and descends again by the same rule. To move the wing against the air is as much as to move the air against the wing. The wing that extends more strikes more air and so descends less than the more gathered wing.
Equal things diminish in proportion to their distance from the eye
Among things of equal colour and size, that one diminishes most which is more remote from the eye. Things equally distant appear equal; at unequal distances the farther appears smaller. The excesses of diminution keep the same proportions as the distances included between the things and the eye that sees them.
The visual pyramids and apparent magnitude
Equal things, equally distant from the eye, will be judged of equal size; equal things at unequal distances must appear unequal. The differences equal things make among themselves hold the same proportion as their various distances from the eye. The angles of the pyramids by which things are seen govern this judgement.
A family dispute over inheritance and money lent on the Botro
Written upside down in a corner, a bitter argument: whom did you love better, Francesco or me? The writer complains he is made heir only so he cannot demand the monies owed him, that he cannot alienate his heir, and asks whether the money lent on the Botro will be returned to the heirs or whether he must instead pay the rents of that property.
