Bird flight and fish swimming: turning, balance and impetus
Studies of how birds turn and glide, compared with fish in water, with boat tests and a festival-hall note
The main fragment (sheet 571a) is a dense study of how birds change direction and hold their balance in the air: sudden spreading of one wing and bending of the tail to turn, rising in a circle without beating the wings, the wedge action of wind beneath the body, and the effect of an asymmetric wing. Leonardo compares this throughout with the way a fish turns by striking the water with its tail, and states the principle that moving the medium against a body is equivalent to moving the body against the medium. Marginal notes plan experiments with model boats, oars and sails on the Arno, and urge copying and safeguarding the drawings. The second fragment (sheet 571b) carries a materials list, a birdlime-and-turpentine glue recipe, and a detailed note on arranging a festival hall.

Turning in flight by wing and tail
A bird flying one way and wishing to turn back spreads the wing on the side it turns toward, setting it fully against the air, while drawing in the opposite wing and bending the tail. Leonardo labels the bird a d f: to turn on its right side it spreads wing d f, folds wing a c into c b, and turns tail c d into e d. The impetus then acts most on the part farthest from the centre of gravity.
Rising in a circle without beating the wings
When the bird spirals upward without flapping, it keeps the centre of its gravity much lower than the wing tips and receives the wind, from whatever side, wedge-fashion beneath itself — under the tail, the breast, or either wing.
The longer wing resists more
Marking a bird beneath a measured rod (c b a), Leonardo reasons that the right wing b c, being one-fifth longer than the left, must resist one-fifth more air; striking more air, its motion is retarded while the shorter wing advances, so the straight motion curves around the more extended wing.
A fish turning by its tail in water
A fish (c b a) poised on the centre of its accidental gravity bends about that centre when water strikes its tail, the softer tail bending more than the harder body. Leonardo makes swimming the counterpart of flight, advising: write of swimming under water and you will have the flying of the bird through the air, and pointing to the mill outfall at the Ponte Rubaconte on the Arno as a place to observe.
Two governing principles of medium and body
Between the columns Leonardo states two rules: first, moving the water or air against an object is as much as moving that object against the water or air; second, the centre of gravity of a fish lying level in water, or a bird lying level in air, sits midway between extremes that resist equally.
Arranging a festival hall
A note plans a hall for a masque: the serving route must pass first before the lord, then the guests, without crossing before the crowd; the entrance faces the lord from the opposite side; the stairs must be wide so the throng does not spoil the maskers' costumes; and the hall needs two rooms at each end, double privies, and separate doors for serving and for the masqueraders.
