The soaring bird rising in a spiral on the wind
How a bird climbs without beating its wings, lifted by a wedge of wind beneath it.

Leonardo argues that a bird rises most swiftly when the circles of its ascent are smallest, and that a bird soaring without beating its wings rides on the wind, which acts beneath it like a wedge; the blunter the wedge's angle, the higher it lifts the load above it. He raises a doubt about how the bird can be lifted perpendicularly without being carried off by the same wind, likening its climb to water rising in an empty screw, and adds a reminder to observe the next morning whether a wheeling bird, coming against the wind, holds line a b or line c d.

The smaller the spiral, the swifter the ascent

The wind as a wedge beneath the bird
A bird soaring without beating its wings receives the wind beneath it in the manner of a wedge; the wedge with the thicker angle has a less oblique side and so lifts the load above it higher. The bird never rises unless the wind enters beneath and forms this wedge.
