A bird's gliding descent without wind or wing-beat
Undulating and spiral descents, circular flight, and a draft letter to Messer Simone.
Studies of gliding flight, illustrated by faint trajectory lines, a small bird figure and decorative loops. Leonardo describes how a bird descends along an oblique line when its centre of gravity lies ahead of the wing's centre of resistance, and how a longer, wave-like descent (moti refressi) lets it travel farther between points a and b. He likens the way birds recover height by wheeling upward in a spiral to cranes breaking formation and climbing 'like a screw' before returning to line, and notes that a bird rowing more with one wing than the other turns in a circle. An inverted draft letter beginning 'My magnificent Messer Simone' also appears on the sheet.

Oblique descent from the centre of gravity
When the bird's centre of gravity lies farther forward than the centre of resistance of the wings, it descends along an oblique line, always keeping that obliquity. The descent that is less oblique is made with swifter motion.
A wave-like descent for a longer journey
A bird travels farther when its descent is mixed with many rebounding motions, that is in waves. Going from a to b, after half a mile it makes a rebounding motion c d, then returns the wings to their first obliquity and descends another half mile, rising and re-ascending until it reaches the appointed place.
Spiral re-ascent like cranes
If a non-flapping bird will not descend quickly, it raises itself after an oblique descent by a rebounding motion and wheels about, climbing in a spiral like cranes that break their ordered lines, gather into a flock, and rise with many turns before returning to line.
Circular flight from unequal wing-rowing
The bird that rows more with one wing than with the other will move in a circular motion.
Draft letter to Messer Simone (inverted)
An inverted fragment of a draft letter opens 'My magnificent Messer Simone, in the past days...', addressed twice to Messer Simone. It is written upside down relative to the flight notes.
