The eye: refraction and inversion of images in vision
Rays broken in the eye's spherical humour; a glass-ball experiment; a reclining lion
Two dense columns develop Leonardo's optics of the eye. He argues that visual rays are 'broken' (refracted) as they pass from the rare air into the dense humour of the eye, and that the images must cross at an indivisible point and be inverted, then be set upright again by a spherical transparent body within the eye. A well-known thought-experiment with a glass ball full of water is offered to show images turning upside down, and a second ball behind the first restoring them upright. At the right of the sheet a reclining lion is drawn, and small eye-and-ray diagrams accompany the argument.

Rays broken passing from air into the eye's humour
Looking straight ahead to a point c, the eye still registers movements along the line of the ears at the lateral points a and b. Leonardo concludes the rays must be broken, changing direction as they pass from the rareness of the air to the density of the eye's humour, as shown at m n o p.
A glass ball of water inverts the images
Images passing through a spherical transparent body cross at its indivisible centre and are turned upside down. A glass ball full of water set before the eyes shows all objects inverted; placing two balls one behind the other restores them to their natural upright direction.
The spherical humour at the centre of the eye
Leonardo reasons from a spherical body set in the middle of the eye that receives the incoming images. A first intersection inverts the images before this body and a second, at the sphere, turns them back, so that the receptive faculty behind it sees them upright.
Reclining lion
A lion is drawn in profile at the right of the sheet, lying down with its head raised and forelegs extended. It sits apart from the optical argument and belongs to the sketches crowding this side of the leaf.
