Why one should see with a single eye; pressing the lower lid divides an object in two

He holds that images travel to the eye only along straight lines, cross at an indivisible point where they would be confused, and so must be inverted and then set upright again by a spherical transparent body inside the eye. A striking demonstration is offered: pushing the lower eyelid upward with a finger makes a fixed object appear to descend, which he argues proves the eye is structured as he describes. He also notes that one should look with a single eye, since two eyes make two things appear as three.

Straight rays cross at the indivisible point of the eye
Images reach the eye only along straight lines and, converging on one indivisible point, would be confused there. Because objects are in fact seen distinctly and diminish with distance, the rays must intersect at the point and separate beyond it, then be righted by a spherical transparent body within the eye.
Pushing the eyelid makes the object seem to move
Viewing one thing with both eyes and pressing the lower lid upward with a finger, the object appears to divide in two, one part staying still and the other descending. Because pushing the eye up makes the seen thing move down, Leonardo argues the soft eye and its inner spherical humour must be arranged as he claims.
See with a single eye
A marginal note insists it is necessary to look with a single eye, because two eyes make two things appear as three and three appear as more.
Images at equal angles are best seen (a c, b d, m r)
The image of an object falling on the eye's surface between equal angles is well seen, as at b, while one falling between less equal angles is seen less, as at a c. If an image lies at m the receptive faculty takes it at r, and pushing m upward sends r downward.
