Continuing the science of percussion on blue paper, Leonardo analyses what happens when a sphere is struck off the central line of its motion: part of it rebounds while part follows the original motion, generating a rotating (circunvolubile) motion, likened to the fire in a bombard that makes the ball spin. He notes that such a rotating rebound always runs a short course, and lists the cases to treat: the struck body immobile, as fast as, or slower than the percussor. A heading observes that the book of impetus precedes this one, and before impetus comes motion. Geometrical figures compare portions of circles, one part double another, another a sixteenth of its circle, and a subtraction, 1509 minus 1269 equals 240, is worked at the foot.

A sphere struck off-centre: part rebounds, part spins
Of every sphere struck outside the central line of its motion, one part reflects back and one follows the contrary motion, and a rotating (circunvolubile) motion is generated, as with the fire in a bombard that makes the ball spin. A sphere struck on the central line rebounds bodily without spinning, because the parts about the struck place are of equal weight.
The rotating rebound always runs a short course
The sphere that rebounds by rotating motion is always of brief course. This arises when the struck body has more powerful motion than the percussor: struck obliquely, off its central line, it gains only unequal power to rebound, so its motion becomes a compound of straight and rotating motion and its straight course is short.
