The upper right of this blue sheet carries a small mill plan marked 'open'. The principal figure and text describe a siphon (cicognola) lettered c a, d b, e n, f: to prime it, first fill the leg a b with the ends n e closed, then open them together like a lock-gate so the excess d e draws the water and fills the pipe e f, giving it great motion. At lower right a note observes that when two touching bodies descend, the lighter one lags and separates from the heavier.

How to prime a siphon (cicognola)
To fill the siphon, first fill the part a b while keeping the ends n e closed; then the water passes into c e. Once it is full, open the ends n e at once with a sliding gate, as at a lock gate, so that the excess d e draws the water a b and fills the pipe e f completely, taking on great motion.
Descent of two touching bodies
If two bodies touching together descend, the lighter one will slow and separate from the heavier. The note then begins to consider the case of the smaller body.
