Designs for a water clock that strikes the hours
A striking clock driven by basins filled and emptied by water over 24 hours
This densely drawn sheet works out a water-driven clock that strikes the hours by filling and emptying a set of basins ('bottini'). The notes describe the sequence at the 23rd and 24th hours, how the last hour's water reopens the original conduit to refill the first basin, and the sizing of the vessels, one four fingers high that empties in an hour, another holding about a boccale so as to be light to turn. A central distributing vessel m, set a quarter-braccio above the basins' mouths, swivels to feed all the basins in turn and then away from them, and a small screw-raised float redirects its spout. One figure also poses the problem of a revolving motion on a plane achieved without wheel or teeth.

Timing the 23rd and 24th hours
At the 23rd hour the first basin is opened to receive two hours' water and let it out over two hours without striking, then in the second hour it strikes the first hour. This avoids interrupting the count, since the first hour begins the instant the 24 hours strike.
The last hour reopens the source
When 24 hours have struck, the same water leaves the basin and opens the original conduit, that is the source that fills the first basin. When all the basins are full, the original source of water is shut off.
The distributing vessel m
Labelled n, m. Vessel m sits a quarter-braccio above the basins' mouths and holds about a boccale so it is light to turn. When the first hour's basin is full it swivels m to feed all the basins at once; once they are full the surplus water channels under m and turns it clear of every basin until the 24-hour water returns it to the first vessel.
A screw-raised float redirects the spout
Labelled m. The small one-boccale vessel is turned by the 24 hours to fill only itself; when full, a float rising on a screw turns the spout to fill the other 23 basins. When those are full the rising float turns the water-giver away from each vessel until the 24 hours strike and return it to the first place.
