Studies of water columns, air and vacuum in tubes, with the wheels, basins and floats of a water clock
The verso continues the water-clock apparatus, labelling its wheel of eight spokes, its row of vessels ('bottini'), a tongue-valve ('linguella') and the floats ('baghe'). Alongside, a set of hydrostatic arguments examines water in cylinders and discharge tubes: only the water actually poured out gains force, while the rest of a connected vessel feels no change of weight, and a tube open below will not pour until it draws out the air bordering it and raises water to fill the vacuum. Leonardo works out how long such a tube must be, invoking his maxims that inequality is the cause of all local motion and that no rest exists without equality. A note on a millstone, vat and pump ('tromba') applies the same reasoning to a working device.

Only the poured water gains force
Marked 'Adversary'. Only the water that is actually poured out acquires power, equal to a like quantity of water of the same height and thickness. All the rest of the water in the vessel continuous with it feels no change of that weight.
How tall a tube must be to draw out its air
Labelled a, d, b, e, c, f, g. Until the water fills a b, the water e g must weigh more than all the water a b can hold, or it cannot drive out the air remaining there. The tube d g must hold as much water as fits in a b, plus as much air, or it will not work.
Why open water does not pour: the air sustains it
Labelled d, a, f, c, b. If the water a b does not pour though its mouth is open below, the air a d c sustains it. Since that air gives no weight to its opposite part at c, this violates 'no rest is without equality', so enough water must be raised above c to balance the weight of a b.
Inequality causes motion; no rest without equality
Amid a note on a millstone, vat and pump, Leonardo sets down general maxims: inequality is the cause of all local motions, no rest is without equality, and the air always rests between equal powers of the water enclosed with it.
