Leonardo describes an instrument without wheels that fills the vessel b c with air, charged by a plunger r S that travels four fingers up and down, matching the length of the tooth i. As the plunger descends, the vents o p open and the air of the largest reservoir passes down one branch of a siphon together with the falling water. He reasons that the escaping air equals the water in quantity and velocity, first condensing at the top of the conduit, and concludes that in truth the air mixes into the descending water in small particles.
