Wheels on Pivots; Crossed Optic Nerves; a Buckle Account
Friction and ease of revolution in axles, an eye-anatomy note, and a dated 1503 reckoning
The sheet is dominated by studies of wheels and cylinders turning on pivots of different sizes, arguing that a wheel carried on a smaller pivot revolves more easily and transmits less of its weight to the mover; the worked cases run from 300 to 2000 pounds. A central column adds an anatomical note: Leonardo proposes sawing a head at the eyebrows to learn why the two eyes move together, which he links to the intersection of the optic nerves. A staff a b held by two men illustrates the leverage of thick versus thin pivots, and three wheels set vertical, oblique and horizontal pose a question about which sustains the longest motion. At the upper left a dated account of 12 May 1503 records buckles supplied to Vincenzo, reckoned in florins, soldi and denari.

The smaller pivot gives easier revolution
Among wheels of equal diameter, the one supported by the smaller pivot revolves most easily. The whole weight of the wheels rests on the supports of their pivots, and the further the pivot's diameter enters the wheel's, the less weight the wheel imposes on its mover.
Crossed optic nerves and the parallel motion of the eyes
Leonardo notes that he should saw a head at the eyebrows to find the cause of the equal motion of the eyes, which he takes to be almost confirmed as the intersection of the optic nerves. When the eyes examine the parts of a circle, nerves make them move in a circular motion.
A 2000-pound wheel returns only 100 pounds to the mover
Because the pivot's diameter enters 20 times into the wheel's diameter, the 2000 pounds of the wheel loading on the pivot return to the mover as only 100 pounds.
Turning a staff a b by its thick or thin end
If two men hold the ends of the staff a b and each exerts 100 pounds of force, the one turning the thick part exerts four times the force of the one turning the thin part, because the thin part enters four times by diameter into the thick.
Account of buckles supplied, 12 May 1503
A dated reckoning records that Vincenzo (da Ziroso di Vincento) is to have, from 12 May 1503, sums for men's buckles in the German fashion, with further entries on 30 June and 2 September, tallied in florins, soldi and denari.
