Lever-and-cord machine worked by hands and feet
A mechanism that advances edge-on and returns face-on, its power doubled by paired levers
A carefully drawn mechanism occupies the upper right of the sheet: a tall jointed arm running up to point I and H, hinged to a triangular frame of levers and a wheeled upright at right. The long accompanying note explains how the operator's hands and feet drive the machine, lowering the tip of the foot to pull and slacken cords V T P and O S C so that levers turn one way and then the reverse. Paired lever and counter-lever (A E against E F, and A B, A V, A O) are provided to double the power, making the instrument advance edge-on and return with its face, with hands and feet moving together.

Lever-and-cord mechanism driven by hands and feet
The first motion is at C, downward by the feet, and the same at D by the hands. When lever A B lowers the tip of the foot, lever A V pulls cord V T P and turns levers P G; when B A rises, cord O S C is pulled by lever A O and turns P G the opposite way. The whole instrument F G H L moves accordingly.
Doubling power through paired levers
Two movers are provided to double the power: as lever A E rises, the counter-lever E F descends with the rest of the instrument. The result is that the device always goes forward edge-on and returns face-on, and the operator is reminded to move hands and feet at one and the same time.
