Force, time and space diagrams; the spheres of the elements
Mechanics of moved bodies with pulleys and gears, cube-root sums, and a cosmology of the four elements
The right half is filled with Leonardo's mechanics of moving bodies: labelled diagrams relate force, time, space and the body moved (Virtu-Tempo-Spazio-Mobile) through five proportional cases, illustrated with a pulley and paired toothed wheels and accompanied by columns of arithmetic. The left half carries a long cosmological argument on the nested spheres of earth, water, air and fire, taking each element tenfold the one within, the earth some 25,000 miles round, and using cube roots (1 for earth, 5 for air) to compare their sizes. A marginal note 'on the squares of their roots' and a calculation of the speeds of a cannonball (216 miles per hour) and an arrow (2160) tie the geometry to projectile motion.

Force, time, space and the moved body
A labelled scheme relates virtu (force), tempo (time), spazio (space) and mobile (the body moved), abbreviated Vtu, Vpo, Vio, Mle. It sets up the proportional trade-offs among the four quantities that govern a body's motion.
Five propositions on force and motion
Cases numbered first through fifth vary the four quantities: e.g. the whole force with half the body covers twice the space in the whole time (first); the same force covers all the space in half the time (second); double the body and double the time keep the same space (fifth).
Pulley and paired toothed wheels
A pulley marked a b and a pair of meshing toothed wheels (2, 4) illustrate the transmission of force in the motion propositions.
The spheres of earth, water, air and fire
A long argument on the concentric spheres of the elements: the sphere of air is reckoned tenfold that of water, the water tenfold the earth, the earth about 25,000 miles round; taking cube roots of 1 for earth and 5 for air, Leonardo compares the true sizes of the elemental bodies.
Cube roots and the speed of ball and arrow
The cannonball is reckoned to travel a mile in 5 tempi, giving 216 miles per hour, and the arrow 2 miles per tempo, giving 2160. The proportion of the sphere of air to that of earth is set as 5 to 1, the cube root of 100 being 5 and of 1 being 1.
